Does dark matter have mass?

Categories:

Yes, dark matter is believed to have mass. Although we cannot directly observe dark matter, its presence can be inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter in the universe, such as stars and galaxies.

Dark matter does not interact with light or any other forms of electromagnetic radiation, which is why it is “dark” and invisible. However, it does interact with gravity, which is why it can influence the motion of visible matter.

The mass of dark matter is thought to be a significant fraction of the total mass of the universe, estimated to be about five times the mass of ordinary matter. Despite its abundance, we do not yet know what dark matter is made of or how it interacts with other forms of matter, which is one of the major mysteries in astrophysics and particle physics.
